digital & data leaders May 8, 2019 | New York City, USA
The organizers of the 7th annual NYC CDO Summit are excited to announce that Atif Rafiq will be joining the long list of incredible speakers!
As our members and regular readers know, we’ve profiled Mr. Rafiq before. He is the prototypical Chief Digital Officer who began his career as a digital native, and held increasingly varied and challenging roles at some of the world’s most prestigious organizations:
1994–1996: Financial Analyst at Goldman Sachs
1996–1999: Corporate Development and Strategy at AOL
1999–2000: Senior Director at Audible [acquired by Amazon]
2001–2005: CEO/Founder at Covigna
2008–2011: Y! News – Head of Global Product Marketing/Strategy at Yahoo!
2008-2011: Head of Local Business at Yahoo!
2011–2013: GM, Kindle Direct Publishing at Amazon
All of these experiences across multiple sectors uniquely prepared him to become a Chief Digital Officer.
In 2013 he got his first chance, and became Chief Digital Officer and Senior Vice President at McDonald’s. In 2017, he moved into a completely different sector with a wider set of responsibilities, as he took on the role of Chief Digital Officer and Global Chief Information Officer at Volvo Cars.
As noted in an article in last week’s Wall Street Journal, it was announced that Atif will now be taking on the role as President of Commercial and Growth at MGM Resorts International, effective mid-May.
That WSJ article also quoted CDO Club statistics on the increasing number of CDOs who have become President and/or CEO. We’re delighted to add Atif to our CDO Club Hall of Fame, and include him on that august list of accomplished digital leaders. See more on this below.
We’re excited to hear about all this and more from Atif at the upcoming NYC CDO Summit on May 8 at Columbia University. We hope that you will also be there to congratulate him personally on his recent career move!

“Atif Rafiq, chief digital officer at Volvo, plans to join MGM Resorts International as president of commercial and growth, helping guide the casino and hotel company’s expansion of digital services and technology modernization.
The move, slated for mid-May, reflects a shift of the role of CDO from change catalyst to revenue producer, which can also lead to higher offices. At least 34 CDOs have gone on to become chief executives, presidents or other business leaders since 2016, according to The CDO Club, a professional group.”
We’re delighted to add Atif to the CDO Club Hall of Fame, which recognizes CDOs who have become President, CEO, or Board Director: http://cdoclub.com/hall-of-fame/
Last year, Bain Capital and the CDO Club published a report on this trend, titled ‘101 CDOs Who Became CEO,‘ which can be downloaded here: http://cdoclub.com/publications.

WHY SPONSOR THE CDO CLUB/CDO SUMMIT?
For many vendors, its become increasingly difficult to keep track of who is in charge at their client’s organizations. Shifting budgets, internal battles over head-count, new decision-makers in the C-Suite. Almost every sector has been affected.
Seasoned leaders with experience in digital transformation and data-driven culture are increasingly getting the keys to the kingdom, reporting to the CEO and the Board.
We’ve been tracking this shift since 2011, when there were only a few hundred CDOs on earth. Now, thousands of people hold those titles.
We can help get your message to these highly coveted, C-level digital and data decision-makers. We provide our partners with unparalleled access to the world’s top data, analytics, and digital executives, and enable you to learn more about their projects, needs, timelines, and budgets.
If you provide solutions that add value to enterprise CDOs and CAOs, you should join us this year.
